Geopolitical Scenario
The year is 2059. The world begins to recover from a convulsive and violent period, where the power balance between the Erebian nations and the Eastern giants was broken due to a series of conflicts between regional states that wanted their independence from the NCE (New Cetran Empire). These states justified their separatist desire based on the origins of the NCE; large territories and whole nations were annexed through the use of force, using as a pretext the liberation of said territories from occupation forces during (and after) the Third Great War. Most of these separatist attempts were mercilessly crushed, thanks to the military power of the NCE, and those involved were treated as mere terrorists, ignoring the historical context and possible justification for said acts. Consequently, the NCE was accused of war crimes and on several occasions, members of the Erebian Confederation tried to intervene militarily in order to stop what many considered quasi-genocide acts against the nationalist resistance groups of those separatist states.
Within this scenario, the Western world was surprised by the tenacious resistance of a small region, formerly known as Baltia, that stood stronger than any other separatist region, basing its resistance on an intelligent use of its own resources, both human and technological, as well as a strong international media campaign. Thanks to its strong presence on the NInternet (NewInternet), allowing them to bypass the relentless media blockage from the NCE, as well as thanks to the aid of the international free press, Baltia was able to resist enough time for the international community to put enough pressure against the NCE, finally forcing it to recognize the right of the Baltians to have an independent nation.
The young nation of Baltia has earned its right to freedom after a long and painful war, but now the stakes are higher than ever before.
The NCE government, convinced that the territory of Baltia must be recovered at all costs, will use any means to destabilize and overthrow the current Baltian government of President Kirilis.
Story
The birth of the Geist Unit
In addition to the various ministries and agencies that are part of any modern country, the government of Baltia mandated, under the most complete secrecy, the creation of 4 units (named as Geist Division), specialized in countering internal and external terrorist threats (physical or cybernetic). These units enjoyed a wide operational freedom, and while technically subordinated to the Ministry of the Interior, they would only answer directly to the Emergency Cabinet of the Presidency (ECP).
The first of the 4 units to be approved and created consisted of a small group of quick reaction specialists, focused on rescue and counterinsurgency operations, with a broad intelligence gathering capability, both on the field and on the cyberspace, and was assigned with firepower according to the requirements of their expected missions. The unit focused on flexibility, being able to eliminate threats quickly and silently, in heavily populated areas with an expected low percentage of civilian deaths. In order to improve their efficiency, almost all members of the unit were issued with some type of cybernetic implant or prosthesis, which gave them enhanced capacities both in physical and in cyber combat.
The Geist Unit One has its own command and control hierarchy and resources. The team is composed of a squad leader, a field operator and field agents. The Field (Tactical) Operator is provided with the appropriate resources to gather intelligence about the mission and assist the squad leader before, during and after the start of each mission, providing key data about terrain, structures, enemy capabilities, enemy and civilian positions, etc. The Field Operator is also in charge of interacting with the Squad Leader, assessing the situation and providing advice in real time.
The missions will generally be assigned by the ECP, since they have their own information network. However, Geist Unit is generally free to conduct its own investigations, as long as they are approved by the Squad Leader, who takes responsibility for the actions of each unit member. Additional Geist Units are expected to be distributed among the most important cities of Baltia. However, their logistical capabilities allows each unit to deploy through all the country, and even outside of its frontiers.
